Yes, it's that time of year again, when everyone starts looking back at the previous year, and looking forward to what the next trip around the sun has in store. Web designers are no different, and in an industry built around constant change, the predictions come fast and furious. While 2010 brought about some incredible innovations – HTML5, CSS3, canvas, the iPad, apps, and real fonts for the web – 2011 seems to portend something much different.

So you may wonder why someone who doesn't have a driver's license, and who hasn't driven a car in over 6 years is so interested in car commercials. Perhaps it's my American blood, but spinning tires, sharp angles, sleek lines, glass, steel, and blazing fire have as much sex appeal as Angelina Jolie... before we realized just how bonkers she was.

A month ago Steve Jobs unveiled the new logo for iTunes, which swiftly prompted reactions that ranged from 'horrible' at worst, to 'meh' at best. The new logo unveiled by shopping mall mainstay The Gap, however, couldn't aspire to 'meh' on its best day. Their subsequent explanation that this design was simply the start of a crowdsourcing project seems more like a calculated (and cowardly) afterthought than the original impetus behind unleashing this abomination on the world. Yet even if the new logo was a stroke of creative genius, the loudest voices on the web would ultimately be the ones critical of the new design. Should companies simply expect such vocal negativity when attempting to rebrand themselves?

I remember sitting in my high school G/T class, which most of the time was little more that a free period, and being introduced to Megatrends, and the concept of the Information Age. After all, it was 1993, and email and the Internet were terms just entering the public consciousness. I had access to neither at the time, and really no idea that 5 years and a college degree later, I'd be building my first website, or that ten years later, I'd be completely dependent on them. Were I sitting in that class today, however, we wouldn't be discussing the Information Superhighway. We'd be discussing the power of Personalized Intelligence.

Poor iTunes. Talk about a rough week. First your logo gets a facelift that nobody likes. Then your interface gets a supposed overhaul that fails to impress. Third, you get turned into an ambitious, but ultimately misguided social network. And finally, you get hammered with spam within the first hours of launch. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemies, let alone one of my favorite pieces of software. There have been calls for Apple to completely redesign iTunes for years now, but each upgrade has failed to do one important thing... realize what iTunes has become.

Few things engage the design and technology industries like an Apple event, and this year's music event has already set the blogosphere ablaze with commentary. The most anticipated announcement this year was the complete overhaul of AppleTV. Many of us hoped this announcement would herald the death of cable tv and its outdated box technology. Sadly, it did not. Instead we were left with some enigmatic black box that looks more like a hub than a media center. UPDATED: October 5th, 2010.

Though it ain't pretty, Google is really helping us designers pretty up the web. While most designers have been eager to adopt and espouse the @font-face specification for CSS, most gloss over the fact that IE users will miss out on all this wonder until IE9 finally appears on the market. Once again, Google has come to the rescue...
